Support to Covid vaccination hubs in primary care – North Tyneside

Challenge

To provide the lead CCG pharmacist function to the CCG for the provision of the necessary oversight, and support to enable the safe running of the PCN Covid vaccination sites in North Tyneside CCG (NTCCG). Support to Covid vaccination hubs in primary care – North Tyneside

Tasks

The NECS Medicines Optimisation Team worked with the CCG to deliver pharmaceutical oversight and sign off of the three vaccination centres in NTCCG. Our team also offered direct hands on support and practical advice to two centres – supporting the preparation of the vaccine (not dilution or dose extraction). In addition to this NECS’ Medicines Optimisation Team was working with nursing teams to implement vaccination roll out in care homes – including moving vaccine cartons between sites and agreement to use portable fridges in lieu of cool boxes. We attended care home and vaccination board meetings, responded to
queries and provided pharmaceutical advice.

Results

The work undertaken by the NECS team supported the rapid set up of the vaccine hubs and we continue to provide remote and hands on support to these sites. Site sign off by a pharmacist was mandated by NHS England and our support enabled this to happen. The lead pharmacist continues to facilitate use of most up to date guidance on safe use and handling of the vaccines and triages any pharmaceutical queries.
