NHS England tasked each commissioning support unit to gain Cyber Essentials Accreditation by the end of December 2018. This is a government-backed scheme which aims to ensure that organisations are operating securely, protecting us all against cyber-attacks.
As NECS is a very large estate we decided, following advice from the awarding body, to focus our efforts on our Newburn office. We conducted an initial assessment for cyber essentials focusing on our how secure our devices, software, and internet connection were. We also focused on what access control we had in place to our data and services as well as how we protected them against viruses and other malware. Then most importantly how these devices and software were kept up to date.
Following the initial assessment by our auditors, we purchased new software which helped us identify any areas of concern. This resulted in a detailed action plan.
We are proud to announce that NECS passed both Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus, gaining the required accreditation and allowing us to display the kite mark. The task now is to roll this out throughout the rest of the organisation.
