At NECS, volunteering isn’t just encouraged, it’s celebrated. Supporting our people to give back to their communities is an important part of who we are, and our Finance team recently proved just how rewarding that can be when they spent the day as litter pickers on Seaham Beach, County Durham.
The team spent half a day volunteering as part of NECS’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and corporate social responsibility. What started as an idea linked to appraisal goals, quickly became something more meaningful and a chance to connect with colleagues, enjoy time outdoors, and make a real difference to the local environment.
The team got to work clearing litter from the beach and chatting with members of the community who stopped to thank them for their efforts. By the end of the session, Seaham’s shoreline was looking cleaner, and the team left feeling re-energised and inspired.
One team member said: “We had a great time, and the weather was really on our side. It was brilliant to spend time together outside of the office. It boosted our mental wellbeing, strengthened our teamwork, and reminded us how small actions can have a big impact.”
The team described their experience in three words, fun, rewarding and valuable.
Volunteering brings benefits far beyond the task at hand. It strengthens connections within teams, improves wellbeing, and fosters pride in being part of an organisation that truly values giving back. When colleagues return from volunteering days, they bring that positive energy and fresh perspective into their everyday work.
Following the success of their beach clean, the Finance team is already planning another volunteering day in the new year, proof that when employees are supported to make a difference, they’re inspired to do it again.
At NECS, we’re proud to empower our people to take time out for volunteering. It’s good for our teams, good for our communities, and good for the planet.
