This week, we caught up with Anthony Fish, another one of our Service Desk Analysts, to ask him why he choose an apprenticeship and how this will help him in his future career.
Level and Name of Apprenticeship Completed: Level 3 : IT Solutions Technician
Why did you choose an apprenticeship?
I have always had an interest in working in IT and I felt this was a good way to gain experience and learn whilst doing a job.
I’d worked in other sectors, but had always wanted to get into IT, so when the opportunity came up, I decided to go for it.
Why did you apply for this apprenticeship?
I knew people who worked for NECS already and said they enjoyed their job. When I heard that there was an apprenticeship role coming up on the service desk, I thought that it would be a perfect starting point for a career within IT in general.
What are the rewards of doing an apprenticeship?
You get the opportunity to learn new skills, gain a qualification and kickstart your career.
Would you recommend apprenticeships to others?
Definitely – It’s a great opportunity for people wanting to start on a career path and look into progressing into a permanent role.
Do you have any advice for future apprentices?
Take in as much information as you can and take any opportunity to grow your knowledge. I was lucky to be on a team with people with a lot of knowledge, and it helped me with both my apprenticeship and the actual job.
What do you feel are the advantages of doing an apprenticeship over other training or education?
You gain the relevant work experience. I went to university originally, but I found the apprenticeship gave me real life experience within a workplace and it was a lot more rewarding.
A lot of employers ask for work experience now and an apprenticeship will give you both learning and experience within a workplace, so it is the perfect way to start.
What are your future plans?
I am now a permanent employee and have plans to progress into higher positions (currently looking into the Remote team). However, right now, I am continuing to build my knowledge on the service desk and building on my technical skills
