Francis Goodison, Data Manager, describes why he was really excited to join NECS and how he loves the idea that he’s giving something back and working for an employer who’s trying to make the world a little bit better.

“I joined the Data Management team about three years ago after having had quite a varied career. After graduating from university with a geography degree, I worked in the private sector and for a local authority. I then spent time working for a construction firm making maps, predominantly in the oil and gas sector. I became disheartened that the work I was doing wasn’t benefiting anyone one other than a giant conglomeration. After seeing an opportunity to join NECS, I was really excited to apply.  I love the idea that I’m giving something back and that I’m working for an employer who’s trying to make the world a little bit better.

“During my time in the Data Management team, I’ve had the opportunity to work for a number of different work streams. This included working in the local data team, making local patient data available to BI colleagues across different sectors of the NHS, aiming to improve patient care which was a real privilege to be involved in.

“More recently, I’ve shifted into a project team, working on bespoke data projects. Most recently this has involved the development of tooling to improve patient discharges from hospitals. It’s centered around improving a patient’s pathway and finding efficiencies which has already had a meaningful and impactful outcome. The aim is to try to prevent hospitals from overcrowding and patients getting stuck in hospitals. It’s been a great project to be part of.

“NECS supports and encourages progression. I joined NECS as a data analyst. After about a year and a half, I progressed to a senior data analyst and then became a data manager just over a year ago. I now manage a small team of other data analysts and data engineers which has been really fun.

“One of things I love about my job is making a positive impact on patients’ lives. Although I’m not a frontline healthcare worker, I’m just one step removed and everything our team and NECS do, is centered around trying to improve the NHS service for patients.

“NECS is a really great place to work. I work with some wonderful colleagues, who not only are lovely people but also are incredibly talented. To anyone considering a career in data management or with NECS, I’d say apply, there’s no reason not to. It’s been one of the best things I ever did.”
