Home 5 News 5 LGBTQ+ History Month 2025

Feb 13, 2025

This is the second week, so we thought we’d celebrate the long, rich and diverse history spanning the decades.

The theme this year is ‘Activism and Social Change’ and with this in mind, we have included some of the most historic moments in LGBTQ+ History below:

  • 1967: Homosexuality is decriminalised in the UK
  • 1969 – The stonewall riots took place outside the Stonewall Inn in New York City and started an international gay right movement.
  • 1972: The London Gay Liberation from held the first ever Gay Pride March
  • 2000: Ban on LGB people serving in the armed forces was lifted
  • 2003 – Claus 28 (denying local authorities’ ability to support LGBT constituents) was lifted and LGBTQ people were given protections from discrimination in the workplace
  • 2005: Gender Recognition act give Trans people legal recognition of their gender
  • 2013: Same-sex couples could now legally marry

This is just a snapshot of the journey the LGBTQ+ community have been through, and there is still much that needs to be done to progress inclusion and equality for LGBTQ+ communities.

Throughout February, we will also look to celebrate key activists, health inequalities and bullying, as well as how this ties in organisationally.
