The challenge
Coventry City Council’s Public Health team was required to develop a health needs assessment (HNA) for perinatal mental health in the city, which would be used to influence future commissioning decisions.
Our response
NECS was commissioned to support due to reduced capacity in the Public Health team. A partially completed health needs assessment was provided and NECS was asked to develop it into a product that the council could use in partnership with their local ICB and provider organisations.
Techniques and tools:
- NECS convened a small project group with colleagues from the business intelligence team supporting the project.
- NECS established expectations and timescales.
- NECS was responsible for action planning, tracking milestones and identifying and escalating risks and issues.
- Final report produced.
- Findings were presented at a system wide event to discuss the future commissioning of perinatal mental health services.

Outcomes
- Health needs assessment produced.
- Gaps in provision were identified.
- Coventry City Council provided with a report highlighting gaps in provision.
- Findings presented at a system-wide event.
- Future commissioning arrangements for perinatal mental health services were established as a result of the findings.
