Armed Forces Week in 2025 will take place 23 June to 28 June, with Reserves Day being celebrated on 25 June and Armed Forces Day on 28 June. Reserves Day is a day dedicated to recognising and honouring the valuable contribution of the UK’s Reserve Forces.
Reservists make up around one-sixth of our Armed Forces, balancing their civilian and military careers, to ensure that should their country require them, they would be ready to serve as part of the military.
NECS has demonstrated our support to the Armed Forces Community through signing the Armed Forces Covenant at the beginning of 2024 and have also achieved the Bronze in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme.
This year, we’re proud to highlight one of our colleagues who serves as a Reservist, Jonathon Millington. In his own words, he has shared what it means to serve, how he balances both roles, and why he does it.
“In NECS, I work as the IT Field Support Team Leader, and in my spare time, I serve as an Operations Supervisor in the Army Reserves. I’ve been a member of the Royal Signals Reserves for nearly 25 years and am proud to be the fourth generation in my family to serve. Being a Reservist means a great deal to me, it’s my way of giving back and doing my part for the country.
“I balance both roles by prioritising my position at NECS while fulfilling my Reservist commitments. Typically, this involves attending two Tuesday evenings and one or two weekends per month, along with a 16-day annual training camp—meeting the minimum requirement of 27 days per year.
“The skills I’ve developed in both roles are highly transferable. My time in the Reserves has strengthened my ability to think strategically, adapt quickly, and stay calm under pressure. Qualities that are invaluable in managing NECS projects and leading the day-to-day operations of my team. Likewise, my IT and leadership experience at NECS enhances my effectiveness in the Reserves.
“It’s a rewarding balance, and I’m proud to contribute to both.”
Let’s use this day to celebrate and thank those who serve, not just in uniform, but also beside us every day at work.
