Fiona Foster, a Principal Consultant at NECS, shares her experience of volunteering to help older people who are often in poor health, bereaved and isolated after a much missed furry friend, with some human company and a chat and a hug.

“Many of you will already know my lovely Labrador, Zac. For those of you who don’t, for the past 18 months, Zac has been a friendship dog with Wag & Co Friendship Dogs, visiting a Castle Bank Residential Home in Tow Law, County Durham, to spend time with residents who adore dogs but can’t have one of their own anymore.

“Wag & Co. Friendship Dogs are the only visiting dog charity befriending older dog lovers in their own homes as well as in care or in hospitals across the North East of England.

“Zac absolutely loves it, seeing the same friendly faces each visit, soaking up the attention, and of course enjoying a few treats along the way. The residents are always pleased to see him, and it’s heartwarming to watch the joy he brings just by being there.

“I first started doing these visits with Zac as a way to pay tribute to my late grandad. He lived in sheltered housing and loved it when Zac came to see him. Grandad would always keep a box of dog biscuits by his chair, ready for Zac’s arrival. Seeing how much happiness those visits brought him made me want to do the same for others who might be feeling lonely or isolated. I am also a mental health nurse so am very comfortable in care settings, and NECS has helped me to maintain my registration.

“On 13 September this year, Wag & Co are holding their annual sponsored walk around Derwent Water, with routes of 5km and 8km. We’ve signed up for the 8km to help raise funds for the amazing work they do. Sadly, Zac has arthritis now, so he can’t manage long walks anymore. Instead, I’ll be walking with our Golden Retriever cross, Rosie, while Zac cheers us on from the sidelines.

“I’m so passionate about this charity because I see first-hand the difference a wagging tail can make. For someone who doesn’t get many visitors, a dog’s unconditional affection can turn a quiet day into a special one.

“You can support us, by donating through my JustGiving page It’s going to be a great day out, and every donation will help bring more wagging tails and happy faces to people who really need it.”
