Devyn Grainger has worked at NECS for over three years and is now a Commissioning Delivery Manager in the Commissioning Delivery team.

“I joined NECS just over three years ago from Northumbria Healthcare Foundation Trust where I had previously completed a management training scheme and progressed into various operational management roles. I had been looking for a new opportunity and saw a role as a Senior Commissioning Officer at NECS on the Commissioning Delivery team to apply for.

“I was really pleased to be successful in my application and realised quickly that I was encouraged to build on my existing skills and expertise by being part of both the Commissioning Delivery team and NECS itself. I progressed to being a Commissioning Delivery Manager and am now heavily involved in forefront commissioning, managing a range of allocated work portfolios for South Tyneside within the North East and North Cumbria ICB.

“As the portfolio lead for Planned Care, Aging Well and End of Life and Palliative Care in South Tyneside, I work really closely with partners in health and social care. This includes Trusts, local authorities, third sector organisations like Healthwatch and Age Concern – and my role is to support and facilitate discussions on the healthcare agenda, understand what the priorities are and encourage collaborative working so that the best outcomes for patients can be achieved.

“Every day is different in on my team. I undertake service reviews, help to redesign clinical areas and pathways and make sure that we are addressing the needs of patients in the area, working collectively across organisations to facilitate change and get the best outcomes for patients. I feel like I play a key role in support of the future success of the healthcare system as I work closely with those on the frontline who make decisions. I love my job as I get to share the responsibility of shaping the healthcare vision while building relationship with partners and I am part of a wider team, getting to support with local and national targets.

“NECS has given me wonderful opportunities for progression. I have gone from being a Commissioning Delivery Officer to a Manager. I have been able to take part in internal training within NECS; bespoke training which has supported CPD. This has helped my knowledge and skills and I put the learnings into practice in my everyday role. The beauty of being part of the Commissioning Delivery team is the opportunity to receive shared learning from skills and expertise of staff. We now offer a shadowing opportunity to help broaden experience in the team.

“I would say to anyone considering a career in this team – go for it. There are chances to learn from combined specialise skills and expertise, there are lots of opportunities to develop your own skills and a collaborative approach. We have a strong sense of “team” and I have always felt very well supported, which has been invaluable when coming into a new role in a new environment.”
