Helen Riding, Primary Care Research Manager for NECS, recently took part in the latest Research Adjacent podcast, which shine a light on the people and professions that go into making research successful.
Helen’s role is to make research happen in the NHS, specialising in primary care, covering family GPs and community healthcare. “I work to bring the different stakeholders together to deliver research to the patient. I support the researchers to access primary care locations, work with academics to help develop research ideas or signpost them to other organisations that support research, such as the National Institute for Health and Care Research.
“On a day-to-day basis, I might be dealing with academics and primary care colleagues. But at the end of all of that, there is a patient who is hopefully getting access to a research study which may offer them a new treatment. There is a lot of evidence emerging that research activity is better for patient outcomes, that it can reduce mortality, that it’s a benefit for the staff and the organisations.”
Helen is also a coordinator for the national Research and Development Forum, a network for healthcare research managers.
